Is this car still around somewhere?
Is it setting in some shed, barn, pasture,
salvage/junk yard or did it end up as scrap metal?
The last I have it racing was the 80/81 seasons
in Oklahoma? I cannot believe no one knows about this car?

Bud Purkey passed away Friday 1/25/08. Services pending with Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends

Credit for this release goes to Pattie Frost via John Farmer on Racin Boys Forum.
Friday January 25, 2008
Coffeyville Kansas native-son, Buddy Roy Purkey, passed away peacefully early this morning after a long bout with Cancer. Diagnosed in 2003 with Cancer, Bud along with his wife of 46 years Wanda Jean, set out to fight the battle as if they were preparing to race one of his legendary race cars.
Bud, a no nonsense kinda-guy, along with Wanda brought up their three children-Son's Mike and Allen along with Daughter Vicky. Instilled with the beliefs to be self sufficient, motivated, educated and prideful. Today the family, Wife and Mother Wanda Jean, along with Mike and wife Dena, Al and wife Sabrina, Daughter Vicky and husband Russell (Portwood) have provided Bud and Wanda with seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Bud began a career in the Auto and Salvage business right next to his Farm raising Cattle. Bud was a weekend hobby racer of the late 60's running the open-wheeled Super Modifieds at Nowata Oklahoma and later at Lakeside Speedway in Dewey. It wasn't until '74 or '75 that Bud switched to what would now be called a Late Model Stock Car, he continued to race when time would allow running under the Sanctioning of NDRA, NCRA, and MLRA. Bud continued to race when he felt he could, his last race was in 2006 at Coffeyville.
In 1991, Bud with Wanda by-his side, opened Stateline Speedway adjacent to their homestead property and began a new career of Track Owner and Operator. Bud was successful in having Sprints, Limited Late Models and Hobby Stocks competing at his track - the track closed in 2003 when Bud became too sick to run it.

The family is writing me to see if I have any photos of O'dell, Maybe you viewers can help out on this. I thought sure I had one of O'dell on the site, but I couldn't find it. If anyone has any attach them to an e-mail and send them to me or include them on the forum here. I will forward any photos to the family.

1/14/08: I'm just getting started on one of the biggest complaints I get about the site. It's hard to find a certain car or driver wihtout going through the whole site. So I'm undertaking the revamping of the site into alphabetical order. This is going to be bigger than creating the site in the first place. I'm starting off with the Kansas Super Modifieds Section.

Heading off today with a ALCO Stores load to Nashville, GA, Glennville, GA and Pembroke, GA

-------------------
1/11/08: I will begin to revamp the site and the first project will be to put drivers in order by there last name. There will still be different sections.
Jeff Roberg has given me more space on the site, so I will be adding all the photos that have been posted in the forum by viewers.

Back on 9/17/06: I had a heart attack for you new viewers. I haven't commented about it in almost a year. I had my last cigarette that day and haven't touched one since. The stupid thing about it I lit a cigarette up while I was having it. Of course I didn't realize what was going on.
I would like to again thank you all for the dozens of cards, letters and phone calls of get well etc. Even a couple of you stop by. It was really thoughtful!!!!

Read the Randy Willingham Autobiography

There's is plenty of room if someone out there wants to do an article or maybe do an interview with a driver. Maybe even have there own page on the site.

Rustyrail had me checking out every farmstead from Beloit to Smith Center today on my run after his comments in the forum. I did see a couple of stock cars on 24 west of Beloit over by Downs. Not sure how old they are. In a truck you can see things out there that you would never be able to see in a car. I remember the time I mentioned here about the old modified by Copans, OK setting in the weeds. One viewer went to check it out and said there's no way anyone could see that car from the US 75 in a car. I noticed it is gone. I wonder who got it?

1/5/08: I'm bringing back the old format of RFTP Ramblings here on the home page. I owe all you viewers an apology. The last couple of years I have not taken care of the site as in earlier years. I had lost something that had kept me going with updates almost daily back then. I'm not sure what it was? Something just took the fire out of me. This site is one of the best things I have done in my life time. Bringing back the memories to hundreds and thousands that may have been forgotten.

I've got hundreds of e-mail that hasn't been answered.

I'm still driving a truck. The company is Bailey Truck Line out of Abilene, KS.
Many have written to find out where I stop for coffee breaks/lunch etc. On I-70 bewteen KC and St. Louis I like The Bobber Exit 103 in Boonville, MO. In Oklahoma on I-35, I like Perry OK and The Sooner Restaurant. Between Joplin and Springfield MO The Hungry House On I-44 at Saracoxie is a good stop.
Tomorrow I head for Jonesboro, AR and Post Cereal. It is a regular run for Bailey Truck Line. Then most of the time I head for West Memphis, AR and Warren Unilube and a load of oil etc. back to Salina, KS and Advanced Auto. I drive right by West Memphis Speedway "The Ditch" on my way to Warren Unilube. I have www.racingfromthepast.com on my bug deflector on the truck to identify myself.

The Racing From The Past Forum has grown and more viewers check in. I and others have posted photos there. If you haven't checked out the forum your missing quite a lot. Some great articles and stories have been written. You need to check out Luther Brewers Cars and the captions he has written for them. Brian writes some of the best stuff. check Brian26 out on the form.
Check it out and join in.

I received a new lap top computer for Christmas and I bought a scanner/printer/copier. I can use them in the truck so that will help. Being on line via ALLTEL isn't cheap though. But I have unlimited time.
My new e-mail for the lap top is below.

Jay Wheeler writes to id the super below from the Pre Oklahoma 70's Pages. Jim Chance may have driven this car later, but I do believe this was a super built by Bill "Thunder Thornton" Thornton. If my memory does not fail me, the young lady pictured on the fender of the trailer is Bill's daughter.
The captions I had was, Jim Chance drove this super.
