Emmett Hahn

Article taken from the 1977 81 Speedway Program and contributed by Russell Revel.

Tulsa's Emmett Hahn has the distinction of being the only man to have a better record in National Championship Racing Association (NCRA) competition than Wichita's fabled Harold Leep.
While each has competedin 44 NCRA events since its beginning in 1971, Hahn has recorded two more feature victories (17), and has 4,620 lifetime total points to Leep's 4,485, a difference of 135.
Hahn, who hasn't competed regularly on the NCRA circuit since the 1975 season, missed the first two NCRA events of the 1977 season, Dallas and Lawton. He has done well since, winning the feature at Oklahoma City the feature at Oklahoma City and finishing fifth at Dewey.
Emmett will be on hand for 81 Speedway's NCRA event this Sunday to protect his points lead over Leep. A feature wins by Leep (150 points) and none for Hahn could do the trick. The Wichita program starts at 8 p.m. with Qualifying heat races and finishes with the big 50-lap feature.
Hahn denies that he has returned to the NCRA circuit to protect his lead in feature victories and total life time points from the hard charging Leep. He maintains that he enters NCRA competition only when it doesn't interfere with his bid for the Tulsa Speedway championship.
"The reason I'm coming to Wichita this year is because of the fine job C. Ray Hall (81 Speedway owner) did at last year's NCRA," the Tulsan noted. "He got out and worked hard to promote the race and it paid a record purse for the Wichita track (over $7,100)," Hahn continued. "That's good for racing period, not just the NCRA."
Hahn is presently tied for second place with Wichita's Frank Lies with 230 points. Hahn won the first NCRA title in 1971, and finished second in 1972, 1973, and 1975.
Hahn is in no way putting down the NCRA and the competition on the circuit because his NCRA championship and records are very important to him.
The competition is the very best in super modified racing anywhere in the country.
Hahn's main complaints with the NCRA is that he would prefer time trials to drawing for starting position in the qualifying heats, and he prefers to race on only large tracks, half-mile and larger.
Of the ten tracks that promote NCRA sanctioned events in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Tulsa and Hutchinson are one half mile in length or larger. Wichita and Enid are bonafide three eights mile tracks, and Lawton, Dewey, Wichita Falls, and Amarillo are between one quarter and three eights mile in length.
The various lengths and shapes of the different tracks certainly tests the skills of the drivers to the fullest and minimizes the advantages any driver might have with track familiarity.
Obviously, Hahn competes well where ever he races. He has won features at virtually all of the tracks on the NCRA circuit. He'll make a good accounting of himself Sunday, too.

Kansasan Dave Frusher #07 leads Emmett Hahn at Hutch in 1976.
Accounts of this race showed Frusher breaking a drive line on the 49th lap while running 3rd. Dave would finish 9th. Emmett Hahn finished 5th.
Dave would win at Enid later and take the Oklahoma money back to Kansas. We all know how much money Emmett has taken home from Kansas and Oklahoma for his wins.
